Day 14 – March Meet The Maker 2019 – How I Learnt

Just under 2 years ago I graduated with a degree in Industrial Design at Northumbria University. Whilst there I learnt a lot of skills that I use every single day however I didn’t really get into illustrating until my final year.

My final major project was about gender roles in childrens toys and the final product I created was a board game called “Persona” which was fun to play but also subtly showed children the benefits and pitfalls of several different personality types (some stereotypically masculine and some stereotypically feminine). The aim of the game was to collect all the traits and ‘become a well rounded invidiual’ before anyone else. I also designed a spin off product of collectible plush toys of the characters too.

During this time I started to use my Wacom tablet A LOT and loved designing my characters and illustrating the board game and packaging. Using illustrator this much was quite new to me but I kept going and as time went on my skills improved. I inadvertently found a passion for illustrating!

I am constantly trying to improve my drawing skills… I am taking a class on Udemy in sketching and illustration and I try to do a drawing every couple of days (even if it doesn’t get posted on here!).
